History: The Kopinga marae houses the Crown apology to Moriori. Among other things, the Crown apology – which was signed in early 2020 – says, “The Crown … unreservedly apologises for its prolonged failure to act to end your people’s enslavement. … Through this settlement the Crown seeks to atone for the wrongs of the past, and to renew the relationship between Moriori and its Crown under Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi and its principles.”
