The three stars in the centre of the Tennessee flag represent the state’s three “grand divisions” – viz., East, West, and Middle Tennessee. In 2001, when I was on a Fulbright Fellowship to the United States, I visited Nashville, the state’s capital city in the middle division of the state; on 29 April 2014, while on my way from Little Rock, Arkansas, to the highest mountain in Mississippi, I passed through a tiny portion of west Tennessee; and on 30 October 2015 I drove into the state’s eastern division, because that’s where Clingmans Dome is situated. |
