Drakensberg mountains, April 1962

We chose the Cathedral Peak region in part because André and I’d been there before with Dave, but – more importantly – because it offered the prospect of a sensible round trip from a basecamp alongside the Mhlwazine river (the approximate site of which is shown by the red triangle near the upper right-hand edge of this picture) via the Ribbon Falls, up Organ Pipes Pass to Cleft Peak, across to the Twins Cave, down the Umlambonja Gulley, and then back to our campsite near the Mhlwazine river. During the climbing trip, we spent one night camping near the Ribbon Falls, two nights near the base of Cleft Peak, and two nights in the Twins Cave – and these spots are also marked on this map by red triangles. |
