On our way back to Lutsen, while we were driving down County Road 4, the Caribou Trail, the right-hand rear tyre on Cathy and Evan’s car was punctured. No matter how hard we tried, none of us could get the car’s jack to work, so Evan ran down to the main road where there was cell-phone coverage and called the AAA. This photograph – taken at 6:45 pm – shows Evan and Cathy looking on gratefully while the AAA repairman was using a jack that worked. I was wryly amused by the incident, because after successfully climbing Denali / Mt McKinley in July 1997, the climbing party I was with got stuck on the lower slopes of the mountain for eight days. Now, on my second US state highpoint, here I was – once again – stuck on the descent! |
