We drove on to the Black Hills and arrived at Mt Rushmore shortly before sunset. Each of the four faces – from left to right, of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln – is 60 feet / 18 metres high. Gutzon Borglum started the massive sculpture in 1927 and, with the aid of 400 workers and a lot of dynamite, finished it 14 years later in 1941. |
