Climbing Harney Peak

Our first stop was the Crazy Horse memorial. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski started work on this colossal Black Hills project – said to be the world’s largest sculpture – in 1948. The carving is not intended to be a literal likeness of the Lakota chief but, rather, a memorial to the spirit of Crazy Horse, who famously said, “My lands are where my dead lie buried.”
