A few months later I was back in Christchurch, where I found an old print for sale and promptly bought it. I had it framed and it now hangs on a wall in Heather’s and my bedroom. It’s a wood engraving that was published in an 1886 edition of Australasia Illustrated. Entitled “Ascent of Hochstetter Dome”, it depicts the first ascent of the peak on 27 March 1883 by Austrians Robert and Anna von Lendenfeld and New Zealander Harry Drew. The picture is a marvellous memento of my first technical alpine climb.
