Shortly after entering Arizona, we turned off US interstate highway 40 and headed south through the Petrified Forest National Park in order to see both the painted desert and the petrified forest. After leaving the Park, we turned west onto US highway 180 to rejoin the I-40 at Holbrook, and drove on it from there though to Flagstaff.
