The Larapinta Trail, 2023 |
 Day 5 (Tuesday, 2 May 2023) – Section 12 of the Larapinta Trail (i.e., climbing Mt Sonder): Mt Sonder is only the fourth-highest of the peaks in the Northern Territory, but it’s almost certainly the best known mountain in the Territory, not least because of the fact that it was frequently painted by Albert Namatjira (1902-59), who is possibly the best known of all Australia’s Aboriginal artists. Nine days after we climbed the mountain, I deliberately visited the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide to see and photograph this magnificent watercolour with the title Rutjipma (Mount Sonder) that Albert Namatjira painted some time around 1954. |
