Friday, 18 October 1991 – Based at Gokyo: After arriving in Gokyo on Thursday, 17 October, I wrote in my diary: “The ‘big guns’ in Gokyo are the hot-air balloonists, whom we’ve been hearing about ever since we started our trek – and they’re still here. Millions of dollars have been poured by National Geographic and Star computer-printers into their attempt to hot-air balloon over Everest.” This is the best photograph I have of one their two balloons. It was taken while the balloon was being partially inflated in order to get it into a better position for take-off. |
