After the expedition: As mentioned near the start of this web-album, I had climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, in December 1985. After doing the Alpine Guides’ climbing course in 1993, I went on to climb three more of the seven summits in a period of just over four years – namely, Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe in August 1994; Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America, in December 1994; and Denali, the highest mountain in North America, in July 1997. Eric and I then teamed up to climb Mt Blanc. It’s the highest mountain in western Europe, and this photograph of Eric (on the left) and me standing on the 4,808 metre-high summit was taken by Caroline Ogden on 13 August 2004 (which was, incidentally, ten years to the day after I’d reached the summit of Mt Elbrus). |
