Climbing Mauna Kea

Hawaii has a fascinating history. For example, it used to have an indigenous monarchy (which was overthrown in 1893 by a coup d'état acknowledged by President Grover Cleveland to have been “an act of war committed with the participation of a diplomatic representative of the United States and without the authority of Congress”). On 21 August 1959, Hawaii became the last of the 50 states (thus far) to be admitted to the union; and Hawaii is, of course, the only state of the United States that’s not on the continent of North America.
