Climbing Mauna Kea



Because Mauna Kea is a shield volcano, its slopes are “broad and gentle”. As a result, it’s not an especially difficult mountain to climb, but Mauna Kea is high – the summit is more than 4,000 metres above sea-level and the mountain’s well over a thousand feet higher than New Zealand’s Mt Cook.
