The Milford Track

The three DoC huts – the Clinton Forks, Mintaro, and Dumpling huts – used by “freedom walkers” on the Milford Track each accommodate 40 hikers. As a result, David and I hiked the track together with 38 other people. I took this photograph of David talking to the two people opposite him, Richard Kennedy (with the red hat) and his wife, Treacy Roberts-Johnson, while we were having breakfast in Clinton Forks Hut. They are from British Columbia, where Richard is a doctor and Treacy’s a teacher. In 1995, they had worked for an aid project on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu, and when we met them, there were on their way back (via a somewhat circuitous route) to Canada. We really enjoyed their company, and spent quite a lot of time talking to them.
