Mt Cheaha, Alabama

The inscription on this section of the memorial says: “When this historic shaft shall crumbling lie In ages hence, in woman’s heart will be, A folded flag. A thrilling page unrolled, A deathless song of Southern chivalry.” The continued glorification of the civil war is somewhat astounding in light of the fact that the “thrilling page” in Southern history was, after all, an attempt to defend slavery.
