 I was interested to see that the civil war memorial’s corner stone had been laid in 1886 – 21 years after the end of the war – by Jefferson Davis, who had served as President of the Confederacy. (Davis, incidentally, was 81 years old when he died in 1889, almost a quarter-of-a-century after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.) |
