In 2016, I also fulfilled another long-term goal: I visited Gettysburg – the site of the crucial July 1863 civil war battle that helped turn the tide of the war in favour of the Union armies, and the site of Abraham Lincoln’s November 1863 Gettysburg address. Lincoln’s brief oration – one of the most famous speeches in history – ended with the following words: “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” |
