Portuguese Caminos de Santiago |
 Day 1 (Wednesday, 27 September 2017) – Porto (Matosinhos) to Vila do Conde (18.9 kilometres / 11.7 miles): Three-and-a-half kilometres after leaving the little chapel at Matosinhos, we came across this obelisk. It commemorates the 1832 landing by King Pedro IV and his “liberal army” at the start of a civil war between Pedro and his brother Miguel. Two years later, the defeat of Miguel marked “the end of the absolutist regime that had hitherto dominated Portugal.” |
