Sassafras Mountain, South Carolina

As Sassafras Mountain is very close to – indeed, almost on – the South Carolina / North Carolina border, it’s not surprising to see that the 33-foot / 10-metre high tower is shared by South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources and North Carolina’s Climate Office. Their records show that on 28 October 2015, the day I was on the top of Sassafras Mountain, the maximum temperature was 59 degrees F / 15 degrees C; the average wind speed was 11.4 miles / 18.3 kilometres per hour; and there was a total of 1.37 inches / 3.48 centimetres of rain. However, while the weather wasn’t especially great that day, one consolation I have is that it was considerably better weather than the previous day (when I went up Brasstown Bald in Georgia).
