… and Gerry took this picture of me. We were heading for the Mueller hut, but our progress was painfully slow. While trying to walk on the glacier’s surface, our boots frequently broke through the crust on the surface of the snow and we dropped down into holes as far as our knees or even deeper. Not knowing what would happen every time you took a step forward was both nerve-wracking and exhausting. The sun set shortly after we reached the end of the snow field, and we then had to navigate in the dark, carefully trying to avoid a maze of rock crevasses. |
