 These plaques on a marble wall in the West Virginia state capitol building made me realise that I was in the United States (on my first-ever visit to the country when I was an AFS student) when West Virginia celebrated its 100th birthday – but it was an anniversary of which, I must confess, I was blithely unaware. |
