EMIGRATING TO SOUTH AFRICA: In her 1948 to 1952 five-year diary, my grandmother Olive noted that on Thursday, 6 January 1949, “Dorrie [Olive’s sister, Dorothy Challen] & I went to Waterloo to see Frank & Co [i.e., Bobby – whose ‘real’ name was Francis and his mother thus called him Frank – and Lilian, Anthony, Stuart, and me] off for Johannesburg.” Putting this exciting news into perspective, Olive added, “Then shopping, bought hat & bed warmer …”.
