Thirteen Formative Years



JOHANNESBURG: Shortly before I left Johannesburg in early August 1962, I drove out to the southern fringes of the city specifically to photograph some of the mines and miners. On my way to photograph some of Johannesburg’s gold mines, I passed this sign pointing the way to the Robinson Deep mine’s Chris Shaft, which had (I later learnt) been a key site during the August 1946 strike by black African miners.
