Thirteen Formative Years |
 LIVING IN JOHANNESBURG – 37 Sunnyside Road, Birnam: During the thirteen-and-a-half years that we lived in Johannesburg, Bobby and Lilian owned just two houses. The first house was a thatched bungalow at 37 Sunnyside Road in Birnam – close to Corlett Drive and the Wanderers cricket ground – in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. We lived there for only two years (from 1949 until 1951), and the house no longer exists. In early 2021, however, I took this picture of Google Street View’s photograph of where the house used to be: the property is now part of the Corlett Drive BP garage (which can be seen through the railings on the left-hand side of the picture). |
