 LIVING IN JOHANNESBURG – St-Martin’s-in-the-Veld: Rosebank is one of Parktown North’s adjoining suburbs, and the local Anglican church – St-Martin’s-in-the-Veld – was roughly a mile (1.6 kilometres) away from our house. The name of the church always struck me as rather too imitative of the name of Trafalgar Square’s famous St-Martin’s-in-the-Fields: was it parody or flattery? Nevertheless, it was the church we went to for five years or so. |
