Thirteen Formative Years

EDUCATION – Saxonwold Primary School: … Father Trevor Huddleston – the radical Anglican priest – opened the school fete. I thought he was a scary figure. With his long black cassock flapping around him, I thought Trevor Huddleston looked like a crow – and I think that this famous photograph by the renowned African photographer, Peter Magubane, shows that my childish judgement wasn’t far off the mark. A brief biography of Huddleston notes that he was “born in England in 1913, [and] came to South Africa in 1943 as an Anglican priest. He spent most of his time in Sophiatown and became one of apartheid's most strident opponents – which is what led to him being recalled to the land of his birth in 1955.” He was later appointed to be Bishop of Masasi in Tanzania, and later still was made Bishop of Stepney in London.
