Thirteen Formative Years

HOLIDAYS – Transkei: We also spent two summer holidays in what used to be called the Transkei (but is now better known as the Wild Coast, and is in the north-eastern corner of South Africa’s Eastern Cape province). During the summer of 1956-57, we holidayed at Coffee Bay. This is a photograph taken by Bobby Roberts during one of our two Transkei holidays. It’s of Execution Rock (or Mlengana), so named because – legend has it – King Faku put his enemies to death by throwing them off the rock.
