Thirteen Formative Years

HOLIDAYS – Drakensberg: Shortly after sunrise on the sixth and final day of our April 1962 Drakensberg climbing trip, I took this photograph looking south from a ridge near the Twins Cave (in which we’d camped for two nights). The peak in the far distance (on the left-hand edge of the range) is Mt Memory, while the flat-topped mountain is Cathkin Peak. The prominent rock-face on the right-hand edge of the picture is the Umlambonja Buttress (10,856 feet / 3,309 metres). As one of the St Stithians’ students, Gordon Martin, wrote in his account of the trip, “The view was magnificent and the white clouds below us looked like a foaming sea breaking onto the rocks.”
