Thirteen Formative Years

HOLIDAYS – Magoebaskloof and the Ebenezer Dam: In the late 1950s, a family friend, Don Haynes, persuaded Bobby and Lilian to buy some shares in a pine plantation called Asgard that was roughly half-an-hour’s drive from Magoebaskloof. As Bobby noted in his Memoirs, “as shareholders [we could] go and stay at the old farmhouse on the property by arrangement with the manager.” Bobby went on to say that “such holidays [were] marvellous with walks, horses to ride, and sailing on the Ebenezer Dam.” This is a photograph looking out over Asgard’s pine fields.
