HOLIDAYS – Three hitchhiking holidays: Derek, Rod, Peter, and Ted all made it to Gilman’s Point on Kibo’s crater rim. I didn’t. As this front-page article in the 15 January 1960 edition of the Rand Daily Mail (Johannesburg’s English-language morning newspaper) notes, I “was the only one who did not make the top … mountain sickness and exhaustion at 16,000 feet” defeated me despite “two attempts to continue.”
