Thirteen Formative Years

APARTHEID – Population and policies: In July 1962 – the month before I left South Africa on a permanent basis – I took my black-and-white camera out to the southern suburbs of Johannesburg (to some of the gold mines and to Soweto), and took a series of portraits of some of the area’s African and Coloured inhabitants. This African miner posed for me while he was walking back to his compound in the late afternoon after his shift had finished.
