 LEAVING SOUTH AFRICA – Emigrating to Australia: In early 1962, Bobby applied for and was offered the post of Director of Anaesthesia at the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania, Australia. Bobby and Lilian sold 27, 12th Avenue, Parktown North, and in June 1962 emigrated to Australia together with Stuart, Charlie, and Linda. Leslie Bate took this photo of Bobby shortly before he left South Africa. (Incidentally, Bobby shaved off his beard and moustache while on the ship from South Africa to Australia. In his Memoirs he said he didn’t want his “new employers, the State Government of Tasmania, to think that they had … engaged someone who was a bit of a rebel.”) |
