Lake Waikaremoana Track

This photograph of a former Urewera National Park signpost is a useful way to show where we went. Our starting point, Hopuruahine, is marked with a purple star. The huts we stayed in are shown with purple numerals from “1” to “4”. Although Lake Waikaremoana was part of the Urewera National Park in 1987, it isn’t any longer. The park was disestablished in 2014 as a result of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement between the local Tuhoe iwi (or tribe), and the area is now administered by the Te Urewera Board, which comprises joint Tuhoe and Crown membership.
