This photograph of a former Urewera National Park signpost is a useful way to show where we went. Our starting point, Hopuruahine, is marked with a purple star. The huts we stayed in are shown with purple numerals from 1 to 4. Although Lake Waikaremoana was part of the Urewera National Park in 1987, it isnt any longer. The park was disestablished in 2014 as a result of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement between the local Tuhoe iwi (or tribe), and the area is now administered by the Te Urewera Board, which comprises joint Tuhoe and Crown membership. |
