Whanganui Journey

Fifteen minutes after our snack break, the river made a fairly sharp turn. Heather and I misjudged it. We hit a rock wall on the river’s true right bank, our canoe tipped over, and we fell into the river. With the aid of a throw-line, however, Jono helped us get to a small beach on the left bank of the river, and we scrambled ashore. Jono then went back to our canoe, which was stuck in an eddie. He baled out some of the water in it before manoeuvring both his canoe and ours across the river to where Heather and I – cold and wet – were shiveringly waiting for him.
