Whanganui Journey

After hiking for 25 minutes, we reached this old hand plough, which serves as a memorial to those who lived, worked, and ultimately failed to make a living in the Mangapurua Valley Soldiers’ Settlement scheme. At its peak in the 1920s, almost 40 World War 1 veterans and their families were trying to eke out a living in the valley. The Wynne, Hunter, Dust, and Morgan families are commemorated on the sign behind the plough.
