Whanganui Journey

When the forested sides of the Whanganui started to include pine trees, we realised that we were, indeed, getting closer to “civilisation.” The final section of the river that we paddled wasn’t always as smooth as it is in this photograph (which was taken at 11:45 am), but – thanks to the increased flow as a result of the rain we’d had overnight – the “good rapids downstream” that we’d been warned about didn’t cause Heather and me major problems and we got through them – or, rather, over them – without having an unwanted swim.
