Climbing White Butte



John walking along a grassy farm track heading towards the foot of White Butte. In addition to wearing boots, we both used walking poles and frequently tapped the ground with them, because rattlesnakes are a major potential hazard at White Butte. As one website puts it, “During summer, the butte country crawls with rattlesnakes”, while another warns hikers to “be aware of extensive rattlesnake activity on the trail and at the summit.”
