This map of Mt Zeil gives a reasonable idea of where we went. From our camp near the T-junction on the farm track that’s shown near the left-hand edge of the picture, we followed – to a greater or lesser degree – the dotted line to the summit of the mountain (and we also returned via roughly the same route). The La Trobe zoologists were using GPS coordinates to find the traps they’d previously laid on Mt Zeil. They thus had a tried and true way to reach the 1,400-metre mark (the height of their uppermost traps), and Eric and I were lucky enough to be able to piggy-back on their expertise – for which we were (and still are) most grateful. |
