Europe, 1963

… this is a photograph I took of the car queuing up (or, as Americans would say, waiting in line) on Sunday afternoon, 18 August, to board a cross-channel ferry. (I should perhaps explain the “logic” – if you can call it that – behind the three flags at the back of the car. I’d lived in South Africa from 1949 to 1962; I’d just spent a year as an AFS student in the United States; and I was a British citizen about to take a British-registered car onto the continent. I was signalling I needed all the understanding I could get.)
