More than a thousand people were killed as a result of the 1963 Skopje earthquake – the toll doubtless amplified by the fact that the quake occurred at 5:17 in the morning. Many people would have been asleep in apartments such as these. In my diary I noted that the city was a “picture of devastation & poverty.”
