We arrived in Madrid on Saturday afternoon, 12 October. This is a well-known statue in honour of Miguel de Cervantes, “widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language.” Cervantes lived at the same time as William Shakespeare (indeed, they died a day apart in April 1616), and Cervantes’ two best-known characters – Don Quixote and Sancho Panza – are on the left-hand side of the statue. |
