Europe, 1963

I went to Coventry in late-November 1963 especially to see the city’s new cathedral, which had been opened only 18 months earlier. Basil Spence designed this striking building both to incorporate and replace the city’s old Gothic cathedral, which was bombed during World War II. It’s formally known as St Michael’s Cathedral, and there’s a large sculpture by Jacob Epstein of St Michael’s Victory over the Devil near the main entrance to the cathedral.
