Day 1 (15 September 1969) – Pegwell Bay, UNITED KINGDOM: Heather, Charlie, and I drove from Sidcup, Kent, to the Pegwell Bay ‘Hoverport’ – i.e., the terminal that had been opened earlier in 1969 especially for cross-channel hovercraft. This is a photograph of the hovercraft that we caught. Although the vessel could carry 30 cars, our 2:00 pm trip from Pegwell Bay (which is near Ramsgate) to Calais had only eight cars on it, and the trip took just 40 minutes. We then drove from Calais to Bruges (which is in Belgium), where we spent an uncomfortable night in the city’s Sint-Michiels campsite. |
