Introduction – UNITED KINGDOM: As this 13 June 1969 clipping from the Hobart Mercury shows, my youngest brother – Charlie (who had turned 18 just one month earlier) – won a round-the-world Qantas airline ticket, and (as the Mercury article noted) he planned to use the prize to enable him to go to “America, the Continent, and England, where he would visit relatives.” His relatives in England, of course, included Heather and me, and we asked Charlie if he’d like to join us on our car trip around Europe. Not only did I feel a sense of responsibility for my baby brother, but I also knew that Charlie’s share of our joint petrol costs could extend the range of sightseeing possibilities for all three of us. |
