Introduction – UNITED KINGDOM: One problem we knew we would face was the £50 allowance. Three years earlier, in an attempt to reduce the flow of capital out of Britain, Harold Wilson’s Labour government had introduced the “Foreign Travel Allowance (£50 Limit)”. As a result, Heather and I would each be allowed to take only £50 out of the country. Our car, though, was – in effect – regarded as an extra person, so the total sum we could take with us was £150. It was always going to be an open question as to whether or not we could stretch it to cover two months’ travel.
