Europe, 1969

Day 34 (18 October 1969) – KUTNA HORA: On our way back to Prague, we stopped in the late afternoon in Kutna Hora to see something neither Heather nor I had ever seen before … or since – namely, an ossuary. As I wrote in my diary, the Sedlec Ossuary was “a grim church decorated almost entirely by about 70,000 bones from former plague victims. A musty, almost decaying smell filled the dark air.” By pressing my camera against a wall, I was able to take just one photograph – and this is it. Under the circumstances, it’s not too bad.
