Days 35 to 37 (19 to 21 October 1969) – PRAGUE: As was the case in many European countries, Jews in Czechoslovakia experienced a range of fates. While the 16th century was allegedly a “golden age” for Jews in Prague, there were pogroms in the 14th century and Jews were exiled from Bohemia and Moravia during the 18th century. Worst of all, it’s estimated that 80,000 Czech Jews were murdered by the Nazis. While we were in Prague, Heather and I were able to visit several synagogues, including the Old-New synagogue (the oldest in Europe still in use) and the Spanish synagogue, where I took this photograph. |
