Europe, 1969

Days 35 to 37 (19 to 21 October 1969) – PRAGUE: We also visited the Old Jewish Cemetery. It was fascinating: between eleven- and twelve-thousand tombstones, dating as far back as 1439, are crammed into a small plot of land. As I noted in my diary, “It’s one huge, confused jumble – the 24,000 bodies beneath the grave stones are, at their deepest, buried in layers eleven deep!”
