Europe, 1969

Day 45 (29 October 1969) – RAPPERSWIL: In my diary I said that the Rapperswil youth “hostel is in a sports stadium. The change-rooms and toilets for the ice-hockey rink are in the same building as the hostel dormitories – in fact the youth hostel is a minor sub-function of the ice-skating rink management. As a result, it was dirty and untidy.” But that’s not the primary reason why Rapperswil was a rather memorable stop for us. A woman called Ursula Ott has asked the hostel warden to look out for people from Australia who could possibly give a young Australian woman who had been working in Rapperswil a ride to England. We met the Australian – Lyn Shephard from Casino in northern New South Wales – liked her and agreed she could come with us. Lyn travelled with us for the next five days.
