Day 47 (31 October 1969) – NEAR PONTARLIER: At 12:30 pm we left Switzerland and entered France. After we’d passed through Pontarlier, we stopped and enjoyed a long, leisurely lunch while sitting on a large log in the sunshine. Lyn Shephard is nearest the camera, and because she was travelling in the car with us, there was – as there had been when we’d had Charlie with us – a lot of luggage on the roof of our car. While we were having our lunch the next day (again sitting in the sun), we heard on the radio that England had just had its hottest and driest October for more than a century. Given the weather that Heather and I had experienced ever since we were in Copenhagen, I suspect the same was also true for much of Europe. |
